Flodart Tablet is used to relieve the urinary symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) in men, such as a weak stream, difficulty starting, and needing to pass urine often, especially at night. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing tamsulosin, which belongs to a class of medicines called alpha blockers.
This medicine relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck so urine flows more easily. It relieves symptoms but does not shrink the prostate. Take it once a day after the same meal, swallowed whole without crushing or chewing, as prescribed.
Cutting down on fluids, caffeine and alcohol in the evening, and emptying your bladder fully before bed can help reduce night-time trips to the toilet.
Before starting, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, low blood pressure or fainting episodes, and about other medicines you take, especially other blood pressure medicines and medicines for erectile dysfunction. If you are due to have cataract or glaucoma surgery, tell your eye surgeon that you take this medicine, as it can affect the pupil during surgery. It can cause dizziness, especially when starting, so rise slowly and do not drive if affected. Contact your doctor if you faint or feel very dizzy on standing. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
