CompositionApiban Tablet is used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in certain adults with atrial fibrillation not caused by heart valve disease, to prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery, and to prevent clots from coming back after treatment for deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing apixaban 2.5mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called direct oral anticoagulants (factor Xa inhibitors).
The 2.5mg strength is used for clot prevention after joint replacement, for long-term prevention of repeat clots after at least 6 months of treatment, and in atrial fibrillation for people who need a lower dose because of older age, low body weight or reduced kidney function. Higher doses are used to treat new clots. Take it daily, about 12 hours apart, with or without food. It does not need regular INR blood tests.
Use a soft toothbrush and an electric razor, take care with sharp objects, avoid activities with a high risk of injury, and carry your anticoagulant card.
Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as this raises the risk of stroke or clots. It is not suitable for people with mechanical heart valves. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have active bleeding, a bleeding disorder, severe liver or kidney disease, a stomach ulcer, or recent surgery or bleeding in the brain, and about all other medicines you take, especially other blood thinners, painkillers, and certain antifungals, HIV and epilepsy medicines. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Tell every doctor and dentist that you take it before any procedure. Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that will not stop, black or tarry stools, vomiting of blood, blood in the urine, a severe headache, sudden weakness or confusion, or a fall or head injury.
