Niftran Capsule is used to treat bacterial infections of the bladder and lower urinary tract (urinary tract infections, UTIs). It is a single-ingredient medicine containing nitrofurantoin, which belongs to a class of medicines called urinary antibacterials.
This medicine is also used to help prevent repeated urinary tract infections in people who get them often. It helps ease symptoms such as burning when passing urine and needing to pass urine often. Take it with food or milk to reduce stomach upset, and complete the full course prescribed by your doctor, even if you feel better early.
Drinking plenty of water, passing urine regularly rather than holding it, and emptying your bladder after sexual intercourse can help flush out bacteria and lower the chance of infection returning.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, lung or liver disease, diabetes, anaemia, vitamin B deficiency, nerve problems, or G6PD deficiency (an inherited blood condition), and about other medicines you take. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, especially near your due date, or breastfeeding. This medicine may turn your urine dark yellow or brown, which is harmless. Contact your doctor if you develop a cough or breathlessness, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
