It contains tolvaptan, which blocks the action of a hormone that causes the body to retain water. Treatment is usually started in a hospital setting, where sodium levels and the rate of correction can be closely monitored. Ensure you have free access to water throughout treatment, and drink when you feel thirsty, as your doctor advises.
Your doctor will check your blood sodium levels regularly during treatment to ensure they are rising at a safe rate. Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it may affect how the medicine works.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have any liver problems, difficulty passing urine, or are taking other medicines, particularly those that affect sodium or kidney function.
