Monocef O Tablet is an oral antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, throat, ears, skin, urinary tract and reproductive organs. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing cefpodoxime proxetil, and belongs to a class of medicines called third-generation cephalosporin antibiotics.
This medicine works by stopping bacteria from building their cell walls, which kills the bacteria causing the infection. It only works on bacterial infections and not on viral infections such as colds or flu. Take it with food as prescribed by your doctor, to help absorption and reduce stomach discomfort, and finish the full course even if you feel better quickly, to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.
Rest well, drink plenty of fluids, and maintain good personal hygiene while you recover from the infection.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction to any antibiotic (including penicillin or cephalosporins), or if you have kidney disease or stomach problems. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should speak to their doctor before starting.
