Tapal ER Tablet is used to manage severe, long-lasting pain that needs continuous pain relief when other painkillers have not worked well enough. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing tapentadol in an extended-release form, and belongs to a class of medicines called opioid analgesics.
This medicine is also used to manage painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy, a type of nerve pain in the feet or legs caused by diabetes. The tablet releases the medicine slowly through the day. Swallow it whole with water; do not break, crush, chew or dissolve it, as this can release a harmful amount at once. Take it exactly as prescribed by your doctor and never take more than prescribed.
Avoid alcohol completely while taking this medicine. Eating fibre-rich food and drinking enough water can help prevent constipation, and gentle physical activity, if your doctor agrees, may help you cope with long-term pain.
This medicine can be habit-forming, so use it only as prescribed and store it safely out of the reach of others. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have breathing problems, epilepsy, a head injury, liver or kidney disease, or a history of substance misuse, and about any other medicines you take, especially sleeping tablets, medicines for anxiety or depression, or other painkillers. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It may cause drowsiness, so do not drive until you know how it affects you. Seek medical help straight away if you have slow or shallow breathing or extreme sleepiness. Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly unless your doctor advises you to do so.
