• Nitric Oxide Release: Glyceryl trinitrate releases a substance called nitric oxide (NO) in your body. NO is a gas that causes the relaxation of smooth muscles found in the walls of blood vessels.
• Activation of Guanylate Cyclase: The nitric oxide then activates an enzyme called guanylate cyclase. This enzyme plays an important role in regulating blood pressure and blood flow.
• Increased Levels of cGMP: The activated guanylate cyclase leads to an increase in the levels of a substance called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). When cGMP levels rise, there is further relaxation of vascular smooth muscle.
• Dilation of Blood Vessels: The effect of increased cGMP is the widening or dilation of blood vessels, especially veins, arteries and coronary arteries. This improves blood flow and reduces the work your heart has to do to pump blood.
