Lactihep Syrup is used to treat constipation by softening stools and making them easier to pass. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing lactitol, which belongs to a class of medicines called osmotic laxatives.
This medicine is also used to prevent and manage hepatic encephalopathy, a condition in people with serious liver disease in which toxins build up and affect the brain. It works by drawing water into the bowel and reducing the absorption of ammonia from the gut. Take it in the dose prescribed by your doctor, mixed with water or a drink if advised. It may take a day or two to work.
Drinking plenty of fluids, eating fibre-rich food and staying physically active can support regular bowel movements.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have unexplained stomach pain, a bowel blockage, galactose intolerance, diabetes, or dehydration, and about other medicines you take. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if you have severe bloating, ongoing diarrhoea, or if constipation does not improve. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
