Lactitol is an osmotic laxative used to relieve constipation and, under medical supervision, to help manage hepatic encephalopathy.

- Chronic constipation: Draws water into the colon, softening stools and promoting easier, more regular bowel movements.
- Hepatic encephalopathy: Helps reduce the absorption of ammonia from the intestine, lowering blood ammonia levels and supporting improvement in symptoms associated with hepatic encephalopathy.

How Lactitol works
- Lactitol works primarily as an osmotic laxative by increasing the amount of water retained in the colon, which softens stool and promotes bowel movements.
- In the colon, naturally occurring bacteria metabolise Lactitol into organic acids. These acids increase the osmotic load within the bowel, drawing and retaining water in the intestinal contents. This increases stool volume, softens the stool, and makes it easier to pass.
- In hepatic encephalopathy, the resulting acidic colonic environment promotes the conversion of ammonia (NH₃) into ammonium (NH₄⁺), which is less readily absorbed from the intestine. This helps reduce ammonia absorption and lower blood ammonia levels, supporting the management of hepatic encephalopathy.

If you miss a dose of Lactitol, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one.
