Acivir Cream is used to treat herpes simplex virus infections of the skin, such as cold sores on the lips and face. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing aciclovir, which belongs to a class of medicines called antivirals.
This medicine is also used for genital herpes sores on the skin, as advised by your doctor. It works best when started at the first sign of tingling or itching, and can help sores heal faster and reduce pain. Apply it to the affected area as directed, usually several times a day, and wash your hands before and after use.
Avoid touching the sores, kissing or sharing towels, lip balm or cups while you have cold sores. Using a sunscreen lip balm may help, as sunlight can trigger outbreaks.
This cream is for use on the skin only; do not use it inside the mouth, eyes or vagina. Before using it, tell your doctor if you have a weak immune system and about other medicines you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if the sores spread, do not heal within 10 days, or you have fever or eye symptoms. Do not stop using this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
