Tbis 0.1% Ointment is used to treat moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (eczema) in adults and adolescents aged 16 and above when other treatments, such as steroid creams, have not worked well or are not suitable. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing tacrolimus 0.1%, which belongs to a class of medicines called topical calcineurin inhibitors.
This medicine calms the overactive immune response in the skin, reducing redness, itching and inflammation. It does not thin the skin like strong steroids, so it can be used on the face and neck. Apply a thin layer to affected skin twice a day during flares, as prescribed, and your doctor may advise twice-weekly use to prevent flares.
Moisturising regularly, using gentle soap substitutes and avoiding known triggers help control eczema. Limit exposure to sunlight, sunlamps and tanning beds, and use sun protection on treated skin.
Do not apply it to infected skin, and tell your doctor if you have a skin infection, including cold sores or chickenpox, a weakened immune system, or any skin cancer. A burning or warm feeling is common in the first few days. Avoid alcohol if you notice flushing of the face after drinking. Very rare cases of cancer have been reported with long-term use, so use it only as prescribed and for as short a time as needed. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if there is no improvement after 2 weeks, or if swollen glands or signs of infection develop. Do not stop using this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
