CompositionPiclin Oral Solution is used to relieve constipation by helping the bowels move and making stools easier to pass. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing sodium picosulfate, and belongs to a class of medicines called stimulant laxatives.
This medicine is also used, when prescribed, to help empty the bowel before surgery or tests such as X-rays or endoscopy. It usually works within 6 to 12 hours, so it is often taken at bedtime to produce a bowel movement the next morning. Measure each dose accurately and take it as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use it for longer than advised.
Drinking plenty of water, eating fibre-rich food such as fruit, vegetables, pulses and whole grains, and staying physically active can support regular bowel movements. Going to the toilet when you first feel the urge also helps.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have severe stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, a bowel blockage, inflammatory bowel disease or dehydration, as laxatives may not be suitable. Tell your doctor about other medicines you take, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help if you have severe stomach pain, rectal bleeding, signs of dehydration such as dizziness or very little urine, or if constipation does not improve. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
