Bigomet SR 500 Tablet is used to control high blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing metformin in a sustained-release form, and belongs to a class of medicines called biguanides.

The sustained-release form gives a steadier effect through the day. Take this tablet with your evening meal, swallowed whole without crushing or chewing it. Use the dose, frequency and duration prescribed by your doctor.

A balanced diet, regular physical activity and a healthy weight support blood sugar control alongside this medicine.

Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease or heart failure before starting this medicine, and about any other medicines, supplements or herbal products you take. Mention any planned surgery or contrast imaging, since metformin may need to be paused temporarily. Avoid excess alcohol. Seek medical advice if you notice unusual muscle pain, breathlessness or fatigue, which can rarely indicate lactic acidosis, and report any side effects that persist or become serious. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.

Bigomet SR 500 Tablet is used in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus to help control blood sugar levels, alongside diet and exercise.

Uses of Bigomet SR 500 Tablet are:

Type 2 Diabetes: Helps control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Swallow the Bigomet 500 Tablet whole with a glass of water.
Do not crush or chew the tablet, as this may affect the way the medication is absorbed in the body.
Do not change your dose or take it more often than prescribed.

Bigomet 500 Tablet is taken orally.

Bigomet SR 500 Tablet may cause some side effects that are usually mild and go away as your body adjusts to the medicine.

A few common side effects of Bigomet SR 500 Tablet:

Digestive: Loose motions (diarrhoea), stomach upset, nausea, vomiting and flatulence (gas), especially when starting treatment.

If any side effect does not improve or becomes serious, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking the medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.

Management Of Side Effects:

Most of the side effects mentioned above are resolved upon discontinuation of the tablet, are temporary, and, in the majority of cases, do not require medical attention. Take this tablet with food to reduce the gastrointestinal side effects. If you experience severe or persistent side effects from this tablet, consult your doctor.

Bigomet 500 Tablet contains the following component:

Metformin (500 mg): It is a biguanide that decreases glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity in muscle and fat cells. The body can better use insulin to transport glucose into cells, reducing blood sugar levels. It also helps to lower the amount of glucose absorbed from the gut.

Pregnancy

Bigomet 500 Tablet is not recommended during pregnancy. Do not take this tablet during pregnancy until prescribed by a doctor.

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding women are not recommended to take Bigomet 500 Tablet. It can pass into the nursing infant through breast milk. Before taking this tablet while breastfeeding, it is recommended to consult a doctor.

Alcohol

It is not recommended to consume alcohol while taking Bigomet 500 Tablet. If you consume alcohol while taking metformin, the effects of metformin on how your body processes lactate can intensify.

Liver

Bigomet 500 Tablet should be used cautiously in case of liver disease. Please consult your doctor for further advice.

Kidney

Bigomet 500 Tablet should be used cautiously in case of kidney disease. Please consult your doctor for further advice.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

If you are taking Bigomet 500 Tablet with other medications, it can cause low blood sugar levels. If you feel dizzy, weak, have increased sweating, have a fast heartbeat, and have vision disorders, do not use the machine or drive.

Allergy

Allergic reactions to Bigomet 500 Tablet are rare but if you are allergic to metformin, you should not take it. To avoid allergic reactions, read the label and check the ingredients.

Children

Safety in children who are aged below ten years is not established. Consult your child’s doctor for further advice before using it.

Older Patients

Older patients with liver, kidney, and heart impairment should take Bigomet 500 Tablet cautiously. They may also take other medications that can interact with this tablet. Inform your doctor and discuss your prescription medications before taking this medicine.

Drug-Drug Interactions

Bigomet 500 Tablet can interact with medications, including:

Anti-epileptic medications such as phenytoin. It can produce hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar) and may lead to loss of glycemic control.
Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors such as topiramate, zonisamide, acetazolamide, or dichlorphenamide. The concomitant may increase the risk for lactic acidosis.
Insulin. Co-administration of metformin with an insulin (e.g., sulfonylurea) or insulin may increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Antibiotics such as isoniazid. It can produce hyperglycemia and may lead to loss of glycemic control.
Antiretroviral agents such as dolutegravir. It may reduce the kidney excretion of this tablet.
H2 antagonist/antacid agent such as cimetidine. It may reduce the kidney excretion of this tablet.
Sympathomimetic and calcium channel blockers. It can produce hyperglycemia and may lead to loss of glycemic control when taken along with this medication.
Corticosteroids, phenothiazines (anti-psychotic medication), and thyroid medications. These drugs tend to produce hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar) and may lead to loss of glycemic control.
Estrogens and oral contraceptives. It can produce hyperglycemia and may lead to loss of glycemic control.
Niacin (nicotinic acid) to prevent and treat niacin deficiency. It can produce hyperglycemia and may lead to loss of glycemic control if taken with this medicine.

Drug-Disease Interactions

Bigomet 500 Tablet can interact with diseases, including:

Heart diseases: Patients with heart failure are more at risk of hypoxia. Therefore, regular monitoring of heart function is required while taking this tablet.
Severe kidney impairment: This tablet is excreted via the kidney. If you have reduced kidney function, your doctor may need to adjust the dosage of this tablet.
Liver disease: This tablet may cause abnormal liver function tests or liver disease such as hepatitis.
Lactic acidosis: This tablet may cause lactic acidosis as a side effect and worsen the existing condition.

Daily Dose

Take the daily dose of Bigomet 500 Tablet as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage may change based on individual factors such as the severity of the condition and response to treatment. It is essential to follow the prescribed dosage and not exceed it without consulting your doctor.

Over Dose

If you take an excessive dosage of Bigomet 500 Tablet by accident, you may experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and lactic acidosis. Getting immediate medical attention from your doctor or a nearby hospital is essential.

Missed Dose
