Uribid 100 Tablet SR is used to treat bacterial infections of the bladder and lower urinary tract, such as acute uncomplicated cystitis. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing nitrofurantoin in a sustained-release form, and belongs to a class of medicines called urinary antibacterials.
This medicine is also used to help prevent urinary tract infections that keep coming back. It works mainly in the urine, where it acts against common UTI-causing bacteria such as E. coli, so it is not suitable for kidney or bloodstream infections. Take it with food or milk, in the dose and for the full course prescribed by your doctor.
Drinking plenty of water, passing urine regularly and emptying your bladder after sexual intercourse can help flush out bacteria and lower the chance of infection returning.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, lung or liver disease, diabetes, anaemia, nerve problems or G6PD deficiency, and about other medicines you take. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, especially near your due date, or breastfeeding. It may turn your urine dark yellow or brown, which is harmless. If you take it long term, your doctor may check your lungs, liver and nerves. Contact your doctor if you develop breathlessness, a cough, tingling or numbness, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
