CompositionPiclin Plus Suspension is used to relieve constipation and soften stools, especially when straining should be avoided, such as with piles, after surgery or in people with heart conditions. It is a combination laxative containing liquid paraffin (a lubricant), milk of magnesia (an osmotic laxative) and sodium picosulfate (a stimulant laxative).
Liquid paraffin coats and softens the stool, milk of magnesia draws water into the bowel, and sodium picosulfate stimulates the bowel to move. It usually works within 6 to 12 hours but can take up to 2 days. Shake the bottle well and take the dose prescribed, preferably not just before lying down. It is meant for short-term use only.
Eating plenty of fibre from fruit, vegetables and whole grains, drinking enough water, staying active and not delaying going to the toilet help prevent constipation returning.
Do not take this medicine if you have unexplained stomach pain, nausea or vomiting, a bowel blockage, appendicitis, or severe dehydration. It is not suitable for children under 3 or for people who have difficulty swallowing, as liquid paraffin can enter the lungs. Long-term use can reduce absorption of some vitamins and cause dependence on laxatives. Before taking it, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, as magnesium can build up, and about other medicines you take, leaving a 2-hour gap from other medicines. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if constipation lasts more than a week, or you notice blood in the stool. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
