Phoscut 400 Tablet is used to control high phosphate levels in the blood in adults with chronic kidney disease, including people on dialysis. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing sevelamer, which belongs to a class of medicines called phosphate binders.
This medicine binds to phosphate in food within the gut so that less is absorbed into the blood. Keeping phosphate under control helps protect the bones and blood vessels from damage linked to kidney disease. Take it with meals, swallowed whole without crushing or chewing, as prescribed; it only works when taken with food.
Follow the low-phosphate diet advised by your dietitian, limiting processed foods, cola drinks, and large amounts of dairy and processed meats. Attend all blood tests.
Do not take this medicine if you have a bowel blockage or low phosphate levels. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have swallowing problems, severe constipation, recent bowel surgery or inflammatory bowel disease, and about other medicines you take; some medicines, such as ciprofloxacin, levothyroxine and ciclosporin, may need to be taken at a different time. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for severe stomach pain, severe constipation, vomiting or black stools. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
