This medicine binds to phosphate from food in the digestive tract, preventing it from being absorbed into the blood, which helps control blood phosphate levels and protects the bones and blood vessels from the harmful effects of excess phosphate. Take this tablet with meals, exactly as your doctor prescribes, since it needs to be present with food to bind phosphate effectively, and swallow the tablet whole without crushing or chewing. Use the dose, frequency and duration prescribed by your doctor.
Attending regular blood tests to monitor your phosphate and calcium levels supports safe treatment alongside this medicine.
Tell your doctor about any other medicines, supplements or herbal products you take before starting this medicine, and leave a gap of at least one hour before or three hours after this medicine when taking other oral medicines, as sevelamer can reduce their absorption. Speak to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Report any side effects that persist or become serious. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
