Laxitol Syrup is an osmotic laxative used to manage constipation and hepatic encephalopathy, a condition in which the liver cannot clear toxins from the blood, leading to confusion and mental changes. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing lactitol, and belongs to a class of medicines called osmotic laxatives.
This medicine works by drawing water into the bowel, which softens stools and makes them easier to pass, and in hepatic encephalopathy it helps the body remove toxins that affect mental clarity. Use the measuring cup provided to take the dose prescribed by your doctor, usually with a meal or before bedtime.
Drinking plenty of water through the day and eating fibre-rich foods can help this treatment work well and reduce bloating.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have diabetes, an intolerance to certain sugars, or any blockage of the bowel, and about any other medicines you take. Seek medical advice if constipation does not improve, or if you have severe stomach cramps or persistent diarrhoea.
