CompositionGlucobay M 50 Tablet is used to control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, especially the sharp rise after meals, when a single medicine is not enough. It is a combination medicine containing acarbose 50mg, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor, and metformin, a biguanide.
Acarbose slows the digestion of starches and sugars in the gut, reducing blood sugar spikes after meals, while metformin lowers the sugar made by the liver and helps the body use insulin better. Take it with the first bite of each main meal, as prescribed.
A diet with controlled carbohydrates at each meal, regular activity, keeping a healthy weight and checking your blood sugar as advised support better control. gas and bloating often ease if you limit sugary foods.
This combination does not usually cause low blood sugar on its own, but it can when taken with a sulfonylurea or insulin; treat low blood sugar with glucose (dextrose), not table sugar. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, a bowel condition such as inflammatory bowel disease, bowel blockage or a large hernia, heart failure, or drink alcohol heavily, and about other medicines you take. Your doctor may pause it before surgery or scans using contrast dye, and if you become dehydrated or very unwell with vomiting or diarrhoea. Long-term metformin use can lower vitamin B12, so your doctor may check it. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek urgent help for unusual muscle pain, fast breathing, stomach pain, feeling very cold or extreme tiredness, which can rarely signal a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
