Fucidin Ointment is used to treat bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, infected cuts and wounds, sycosis barbae (barber's itch) and erythrasma. It relieves the swelling, redness and discomfort caused by the infection.
It contains fusidic acid, an antibiotic that stops bacteria making the proteins they need to grow, which allows the infection to clear. Apply a thin layer to the affected area as directed by your doctor, and complete the full course of treatment even if the skin looks better sooner.
Keeping the affected area clean and dry, washing your hands before and after applying the ointment, and avoiding tight or occlusive dressings unless your doctor advises otherwise can help the skin heal and prevent the infection from spreading.
Tell your doctor about any other skin treatments you are using before starting this ointment. Avoid contact with the eyes, and consult your doctor if the infection does not improve within a week or if it appears to be spreading.
