This medicine is also used to manage severe asthma, skin allergies and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, and to reduce swelling around the brain or spine after injury.
A diet with enough calcium and vitamin D and limited added salt, along with regular monitoring, may be advised, as steroids can affect the bones, blood sugar and fluid balance.
Before starting, tell your doctor about any infections, diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers or glaucoma, and about other medicines you take. Let your doctor know if you are exposed to infections such as chickenpox, or if you notice a marked change in mood.
