Susten SR Tablet is used to support pregnancy and treat conditions caused by low progesterone, such as threatened or repeated miscarriage, and to support pregnancy during fertility treatment. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing natural micronised progesterone 400mg in a sustained-release form, and belongs to a class of medicines called progestogens (female hormones).
This medicine is also used to treat absent periods (secondary amenorrhoea) and abnormal bleeding from the womb, and together with oestrogen in hormone replacement therapy to protect the womb lining. Take it exactly as prescribed; it is often taken at bedtime because it can cause drowsiness. Swallow the tablet whole without crushing or chewing.
Eating a balanced diet, keeping a record of any bleeding and attending all check-ups and scans help your doctor review your treatment.
Before starting, tell your doctor if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease, a history of blood clots or stroke, breast or womb cancer, a suspected ectopic pregnancy or a pregnancy that has stopped developing, or depression, and about other medicines you take. It can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so do not drive if affected. Seek medical help straight away for heavy bleeding, severe tummy pain, pain or swelling in one leg, chest pain, sudden breathlessness, severe headache or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
