Rifatreat 400 Tablet is an antibiotic primarily used to treat traveller's diarrhoea caused by non-invasive E. coli. It contains rifaximin, and unlike most antibiotics, it is poorly absorbed into the bloodstream, meaning it stays in the gut to target the infection directly.
It is also used to manage irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea (IBS-D) and to help reduce the risk of recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with liver disease. In patients with liver disease, the tablet helps reduce the amount of ammonia-producing bacteria in the gut, which prevents toxins from reaching the brain and causing confusion. Take it as prescribed by your doctor.
Completing the full prescribed course, even if bowel movements return to normal early, helps ensure the treatment is fully effective.
If you experience severe abdominal pain or if the diarrhoea worsens, contact your healthcare provider. This medication is not effective for infections that have spread outside the digestive tract.
