Methimez 10 Tablet is used to treat an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), including Graves' disease. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing methimazole (thiamazole) 10mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called antithyroid medicines.
This medicine reduces the amount of thyroid hormone the gland makes, easing symptoms such as a fast heartbeat, anxiety, tremor, sweating and weight loss. It is also used to prepare people for thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine treatment. Take it at the same times each day, as prescribed; it can take several weeks to work, and your doctor will adjust the dose with blood tests.
Eating a balanced diet, getting enough rest and avoiding excess caffeine can help while your thyroid levels settle. Attend all blood tests.
This medicine can rarely cause a serious fall in white blood cells (agranulocytosis), usually in the first few months. Stop taking it and see a doctor straight away for a blood test if you develop a sore throat, fever, mouth ulcers or other signs of infection. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, a blood disorder or a previous reaction to antithyroid medicines, and about other medicines you take, especially warfarin. Women should use effective contraception and tell their doctor at once if they become pregnant, as it can harm an unborn baby, especially in early pregnancy. Report yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine or stomach pain. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
