Mahacef Plus Tablet is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including typhoid fever, urinary tract infections and respiratory tract infections. It is a combination medicine containing cefixime, a cephalosporin antibiotic, and ofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, and belongs to classes of medicines called cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones.
This medicine works by cefixime weakening the bacterial cell wall while ofloxacin blocks the enzymes bacteria need to copy their DNA, so the bacteria cannot multiply. It is also used for ear, nose and throat infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gut infections and sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhoea. Take it exactly as prescribed and complete the full course, even if your symptoms improve earlier.
Drinking plenty of fluids and leaving a gap of at least 2 hours between this medicine and antacids or dairy products can help. Avoid strong sunlight or sunbeds, as your skin may burn more easily.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have an allergy to penicillins or cephalosporins, kidney problems, epilepsy or tendon problems, and about any other medicines you take. Stop and seek medical help straight away if you develop tendon pain or a serious allergic reaction. This medicine treats only bacterial infections, and misuse can lead to antibiotic resistance.
