Leucorin Tablet is used as a ""rescue"" therapy to protect healthy cells from the toxic effects of high-dose Methotrexate (a chemotherapy and immunosuppressant medication). It is also used to treat accidental Methotrexate overdoses and to enhance the effectiveness of 5-fluorouracil in certain cancer treatments. By providing a source of active folate, it ensures that vital bodily processes continue even during intensive therapy.
This medication contains Levoleucovorin/Leucovorin, a form of folic acid. While Methotrexate works by blocking the body's use of folic acid to kill cancer cells, Leucorin provides an alternative source of folate that healthy cells can use to survive. This ""rescues"" the bone marrow and digestive tract from severe damage while still allowing the anticancer treatment to work.
Take this tablet exactly at the times prescribed by your oncologist, timing is critical for ""rescue"" therapy to be effective. It can be taken with or without food. Drink plenty of fluids to help your kidneys flush out the Methotrexate. Inform your doctor immediately if you experience severe vomiting, as you may require the medication via injection instead.
