CompositionElobetra 5 Mg Tablet is a medicine used to manage chronic constipation in adults, excluding constipation caused by a blockage or another disease of the bowel. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing elobixibat, and belongs to a class of medicines called ileal bile acid transporter (IBAT) inhibitors.
This medicine works by blocking the reabsorption of bile acids in the gut, so more bile acids reach the large bowel, where they draw in water and stimulate movement, which softens stools and increases how often you pass them. Swallow the tablet whole and take it at the dose, frequency and for the duration your doctor prescribes.
Drinking plenty of fluids, eating fibre-rich foods and staying active can support regular bowel movements alongside this medicine. If you have diarrhoea, drink plenty of fluids and oral rehydration solution.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver disease or a suspected bowel blockage, are taking other medicines, supplements or herbal products, or are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor promptly if you develop persistent or severe abdominal pain or diarrhoea.
