CompositionDabigat 110 Capsule is used to reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots in adults with atrial fibrillation not caused by heart valve disease, and to treat and prevent the return of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing dabigatran etexilate 110mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called direct oral anticoagulants (thrombin inhibitors).
This medicine is also used to prevent clots after hip or knee replacement surgery. The 110mg strength is often used in people aged 80 or over, or those at higher risk of bleeding. Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water, with or without food; do not open, chew or empty it, as this can increase bleeding risk. It does not need regular INR blood tests, but your doctor will check your kidney function.
Use a soft toothbrush and an electric razor, take care with sharp objects, and carry your anticoagulant card. Keep capsules in their original pack until you take them.
This medicine is not suitable for people with mechanical heart valves. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have active bleeding, a bleeding disorder, kidney disease, a stomach ulcer, or a recent stroke, bleed or surgery, and about all other medicines you take, especially other blood thinners, painkillers, dronedarone, and certain antifungals, heart and epilepsy medicines. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Tell every doctor and dentist that you take it before any procedure. Seek urgent medical help for bleeding that will not stop, vomiting of blood or material like coffee grounds, black or tarry stools, red or dark brown urine, coughing up blood, a severe headache, sudden weakness or confusion, or a fall or head injury. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
