Cifran 500 Tablet is an antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections, such as complicated urinary tract and kidney infections, prostate infections, bone and joint infections, infective diarrhoea and typhoid fever. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing ciprofloxacin, and belongs to a class of medicines called fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
This medicine works by stopping bacteria from copying their genetic material, which kills them and clears the infection. Take it with water as directed by your doctor, and complete the full course even if you feel better early.
Because of rare but serious side effects, medicines of this type are usually kept for infections where other antibiotics are not suitable. Do not take it at the same time as milk, yoghurt, antacids, or iron, calcium or zinc supplements; leave at least two hours before or six hours after these. Avoid strong sunlight during treatment.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you are over 60, take steroid medicines, or have tendon problems, epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, heart rhythm problems, an aortic aneurysm, diabetes or kidney problems. It is not usually given in pregnancy, breastfeeding or to children. Stop and contact your doctor immediately if you get tendon pain or swelling, tingling or numbness, sudden chest, tummy or back pain, mood changes, or severe diarrhoea.
