CompositionBactrim DS Tablet is a combination antibiotic medicine used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It is commonly prescribed for infections of the urinary tract, lungs (such as pneumonia), respiratory system, middle ear, and certain intestinal infections.
It contains two active ingredients: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, which belong to a class of medicines called sulfonamide combinations. They work together sequentially to block bacterial folic acid synthesis, preventing the bacteria from multiplying and effectively clearing the infection. It can be taken with food.
To support your recovery and protect your kidneys, it is important to drink plenty of fluids and stay well-hydrated throughout the day. You must complete the entire prescribed course of this antibiotic exactly as directed, even if you feel well sooner, to prevent the infection from returning.
Before starting, tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, severe allergies, asthma, a blood disorder, or a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. It is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless explicitly advised by your doctor.
