Xalatan Eye Drops is used to lower raised pressure inside the eye in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension, helping to protect the optic nerve and preserve vision. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing latanoprost 0.005%, which belongs to a class of medicines called prostaglandin analogues.
This medicine increases the drainage of fluid out of the eye, lowering eye pressure. Put one drop into the affected eye once a day, preferably in the evening, as prescribed; using it more often can make it work less well. Keep unopened bottles in the fridge, and once opened use within the time stated on the pack.
Use the drops every day, even though raised eye pressure usually has no symptoms, and keep all eye pressure check-ups. Remove contact lenses before use and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back.
This medicine can gradually and permanently darken the coloured part of the eye (iris), especially in mixed-colour eyes, and may darken the eyelid skin and make eyelashes longer and thicker. Before using it, tell your doctor if you have eye inflammation, recent eye surgery, a history of eye herpes, or asthma, and about other eye drops you use; leave at least 5 minutes between different drops. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if you have eye pain, swelling or changes in vision. Do not stop using this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
