This medicine works by blocking the specific enzyme bacteria need to build proteins, so they cannot survive or reproduce. Because it works differently from most antibiotics, it is often effective against difficult-to-treat germs such as MRSA (resistant staph). Clean and dry the area before applying a small amount of ointment, usually three times a day, as prescribed.
You can cover the treated area with a bandage if needed, which can help stop a small skin infection from spreading to other parts of the body or to other people.
Tell your doctor about any known allergies before starting. Continue using the ointment for the full duration prescribed, even if the skin looks better, to ensure all the bacteria are gone. Report worsening redness, spreading infection or signs of an allergic reaction to your doctor.
