CompositionMesacol 800 Tablet is used to treat flare-ups of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and to help keep the condition in remission. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing mesalazine (mesalamine) 800mg in a delayed-release form, and belongs to a class of medicines called aminosalicylates.
This medicine is released in the large bowel, where it reduces inflammation of the bowel lining, easing diarrhoea, bleeding and stomach pain. Swallow the tablet whole with water, without crushing or chewing, as prescribed. Keep taking it during remission to help prevent flare-ups.
Eating a balanced diet, avoiding foods that worsen your symptoms, drinking enough fluids and managing stress can help. Keep a symptom diary to share with your doctor.
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to aspirin or other salicylates, or have severe kidney or liver disease. Your doctor will check your kidney function and blood counts during treatment. Before starting, tell your doctor about any kidney, liver or lung problems, and about other medicines you take, especially azathioprine and painkillers. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for unexplained bruising or bleeding, sore throat or fever, chest pain or breathlessness, severe stomach pain, or a severe rash. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
