CompositionBetavert OD 48 Tablet is used to treat Meniere's disease, an inner ear condition that causes episodes of vertigo (a spinning sensation), ringing in the ears (tinnitus), hearing loss and a feeling of pressure in the ear. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing betahistine 48mg in a once-daily form, and belongs to a class of medicines called anti-vertigo medicines.
This medicine is thought to improve blood flow in the inner ear and reduce the build-up of fluid pressure, which can reduce how often and how severely vertigo attacks happen. The once-daily form means one tablet is usually taken each day, with or after food, as prescribed. It may take a few weeks to show benefit.
Cutting down on salt, caffeine and alcohol, not smoking, getting up slowly and sitting down during a dizzy spell can help reduce symptoms and the risk of falls.
Before starting, tell your doctor if you have asthma, a stomach ulcer or history of ulcers, or a tumour of the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma), and about other medicines you take, especially antihistamines. It is not recommended for children. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if you have stomach pain, wheezing, a rash, or if vertigo gets worse. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
