• Disruption of DNA Synthesis: After being absorbed by the body, azathioprine is converted into 6-mercaptopurine, which then transforms into 6-thioguanine nucleotides. These nucleotides disrupt DNA synthesis and inhibit the growth of fast-dividing cells like T and B lymphocytes, resulting in the suppression of the immune system.
