Alpostin 500 mcg Injection 1ml is used to temporarily keep the ductus arteriosus open in newborns with certain duct-dependent congenital heart defects until corrective treatment can be provided. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing alprostadil, and belongs to a class of medicines called vasodilators.
This medicine is similar to a naturally occurring substance in the body called prostaglandin E1, and it works by relaxing the smooth muscles present in the wall of blood vessels and the ductus arteriosus, preventing or reversing its functional closure shortly after birth and helping improve blood circulation in newborns with certain cardiac problems.
Tell the doctor about the newborn's medical history, including any pre-existing conditions, before this treatment begins. Report any breathing difficulties or fever to the doctor promptly.
