Zeptol CR 400 Tablet is used to control several types of epilepsy, including focal (partial) and generalised tonic-clonic seizures, and to relieve the pain of trigeminal neuralgia. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing carbamazepine 400mg in a controlled-release form, and belongs to a class of medicines called anticonvulsants (antiepileptics).
The controlled-release tablet provides steadier levels through the day.. It calms overactive nerve signals, reducing seizures and the sudden, shooting facial pain of trigeminal neuralgia. Swallow the tablet whole or halved as directed, with food, without crushing or chewing.
Keeping regular sleep, managing stress, avoiding alcohol and never missing doses help control seizures. Avoid grapefruit juice, which can raise carbamazepine levels.
Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as seizures may return. People of Asian origin, including Indian people, may be tested for a gene called HLA-B*1502 before starting, as it is linked to severe skin reactions; stop and seek medical help straight away for a spreading rash, blistering or mouth ulcers. Carbamazepine can lower blood sodium and blood counts, so report fever, sore throat, unusual bruising, confusion or drowsiness. It makes hormonal contraceptives less effective and can harm an unborn baby, so discuss contraception and pregnancy plans with your doctor. Before starting, tell your doctor about heart, liver or kidney problems, glaucoma, and all other medicines you take. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
