Neosurf Injection 3ml is used to treat and prevent neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature newborns. It contains phospholipids and belongs to the class of medications called pulmonary surfactant replacement therapies.
Respiratory distress syndrome commonly occurs in premature infants whose lungs have not produced enough natural surfactant. Without sufficient surfactant, the tiny air sacs in the lungs can collapse, making breathing and oxygen exchange difficult. Neosurf Injection 3ml reduces surface tension within the lungs, helping keep the air sacs open and improving lung expansion and oxygen exchange.
This medicine is administered directly into the lungs through an endotracheal tube by trained healthcare professionals, usually in a neonatal intensive care unit. The dose and need for additional doses are determined by the neonatologist based on factors such as the infant's weight, clinical condition and response to treatment.
The infant's oxygen levels, heart rate and breathing are closely monitored during administration because temporary changes, including reduced oxygen levels, slow heart rate or airway obstruction, may occur. Neosurf Injection 3ml should only be administered in a hospital setting where appropriate respiratory support and neonatal monitoring are immediately available.
