This medicine works by stopping calcium entering the cells of blood vessels in the brain, which steadies the vessels and reduces the abnormal nerve activity thought to trigger migraine. It is taken as a daily preventive and does not treat an attack that has already started. Take it as prescribed, usually in the evening.
The preventive effect builds up over several weeks, so keep taking it regularly even if you do not notice a benefit straight away. Keeping a diary of attacks and avoiding known triggers such as irregular sleep or skipped meals can help.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have a history of depression or Parkinson's disease, as it can worsen both and is generally avoided in these cases. Report any new low mood or unusual movements or tremor, and avoid alcohol, which can add to drowsiness.
