Uses of Flunarizine

Flunarizine is a calcium channel blocker used to prevent migraine and manage vertigo linked to vestibular disorders.

It is commonly used for:

  • Migraine prevention: Helps reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks when taken regularly.
  • Vestibular vertigo: Helps reduce dizziness and imbalance caused by certain disorders of the inner-ear balance system.

  • Flunarizine can be taken orally (tablet).

Age and Dose Restrictions

  • It is intended to be used by adults only. It is not intended to be used in children. 

Contraindications

  • It is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Flunarizine. It is also contraindicated in patients having depression, Parkinson’s disease, lactose intolerance, or liver damage.

Other Medications To Avoid With This Medicine

  • Avoid taking anxiety medications (citalopram), oral contraceptives (prednisone), and antihypertensives (amlodipine). These medications may alter the safety and effectiveness of this medicine.

Overdose and Missed Dose

  • An overdose of Flunarizine may cause excessive sedation, pronounced drowsiness, involuntary movements, or signs of low blood pressure. If an overdose is suspected, seek immediate medical attention or visit the nearest hospital. Do not attempt to manage these symptoms at home.
  • If you miss a dose of Flunarizine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed one. As Flunarizine is a preventive medicine, consistent daily use is important for it to remain effective.

Use In Driving And Operating Machinery

  • Using Flunarizine might result in dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, or visual disturbances. It's essential to refrain from driving or operating machinery while taking it.

Use in Pregnancy and Lactation

  • It is not recommended to be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Caution In Other Conditions

  • Caution is advised in older adults and patients with existing depression, Parkinson’s disease, lactose intolerance, or liver damage.
