Meromac Plus Injection is used in hospital to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by bacteria resistant to other antibiotics. It is a combination medicine containing meropenem 1g, a carbapenem antibiotic, and sulbactam 500mg, which helps meropenem work against certain resistant bacteria.
This medicine is used for severe infections such as hospital-acquired pneumonia, complicated abdominal and urinary tract infections, serious skin infections and bloodstream infections. It is a reserve antibiotic kept for serious infections and is not used for routine infections. It is given by a healthcare professional as a slow injection or drip into a vein, and your doctor will decide the dose and duration.
Drinking enough fluids and getting plenty of rest, unless your doctor advises otherwise, can support recovery.
Before treatment, tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin, cephalosporins or any other antibiotic, or have kidney disease, epilepsy or a history of colitis, and about other medicines you take, especially sodium valproate, as meropenem can lower valproate levels and trigger seizures. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Tell your healthcare team straight away if you notice a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, fits, or severe or bloody diarrhoea. Do not stop the treatment unless your doctor advises you to do so.
