CompositionDefcort Oral Suspension is used to manage a wide range of inflammatory, allergic and autoimmune conditions in children, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy, severe asthma and joint disorders. It contains deflazacort, a corticosteroid that calms an overactive immune response and reduces inflammation throughout the body.
The dose is worked out by the child's doctor based on their age, weight and the condition being treated. Give it with food to reduce the risk of stomach upset, and never stop it suddenly, as this can cause serious withdrawal effects; your doctor will provide a schedule to reduce the dose gradually if treatment needs to stop.
As long-term steroid use can affect growth, bone strength and blood sugar, a diet with adequate calcium and vitamin D is encouraged, along with regular monitoring of your child's height and weight. Try to avoid close contact with people who have infections such as chickenpox or measles.
Tell your child's doctor about any history of liver disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or infections before starting treatment. Regular monitoring of growth and bone density may be needed during long-term therapy. Report any unusual mood changes, slow wound healing or signs of infection promptly.
