Avas 20 Tablet is used to lower high cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and other blood vessel problems. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing atorvastatin 20mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins).
This medicine lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides and raises HDL (good) cholesterol, which helps slow the build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries. It is also used in inherited high cholesterol, including in children aged 10 and over. Take it once a day, at any time of day but at the same time each day, with or without food.
Swapping fried and processed food for vegetables, whole grains, pulses and fish, staying active, keeping a healthy weight and avoiding tobacco all help lower cholesterol.
Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, an underactive thyroid, kidney problems, muscle problems, diabetes, or drink a lot of alcohol, and about other medicines you take, especially certain antibiotics, antifungals, HIV medicines, ciclosporin and other cholesterol medicines. Your doctor may check your liver with blood tests. Report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine, straight away. Also report yellowing of the skin or eyes. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
