Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 is prescribed as an antiepileptic medicine for the management of seizures. It belongs to the group of medicines known as anticonvulsants.

This is used for treating seizures that start in one part of the brain (partial seizures), which may or may not spread to the entire brain (secondary generalisation). It can be prescribed alone in adults or alongside other antiepileptic medicines in adults, adolescents, and children aged 6 years and above.

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 is used for:

Treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalisation in adults.
Adjunctive therapy for seizures in adults, adolescents, and children (≥6 years of age).

Swallow the capsule whole with water.
It may be taken with or without food.
Do not chew, crush, or open the capsule.
Follow your doctor’s exact dosage instructions without altering them.

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 is taken orally.

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 may have the following common side effects:

Difficulty sleeping, strange dreams, feeling anxious
Slowed thoughts, reduced concentration, abnormal sensations (pins and needles)
Tremor, involuntary eye movements
Skin rash, itching, allergic reactions
Fever, tiredness, flu-like symptoms
Hair loss, weight loss
Nausea, indigestion, diarrhoea, constipation
Kidney stones.
Swelling of feet and legs

Most side effects are temporary, generally harmless, and resolve upon discontinuing the use of Zonimid 50 Capsule 10. However, if you experience any serious side effects or worsening of any of the symptoms, please consult your doctor.

Nausea or stomach upset: Take with food, eat smaller frequent meals, and avoid spicy food.
Kidney stones: Drink adequate water throughout the day to reduce risk.
Skin rash or itching: Inform your doctor immediately; do not self-medicate with creams.
Difficulty sleeping: Maintain a consistent bedtime routine and avoid caffeine at night.
Drowsiness or dizziness: Avoid alcohol and do not drive until you know how the medicine affects you.

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 contains following component:

Zonisamide (50 mg): An antiepileptic agent that works by stabilising electrical activity in the brain. It reduces abnormal nerve signals that can trigger seizures. Zonisamide also has effects on certain enzymes (carbonic anhydrase inhibition), which may influence metabolism and contribute to its efficacy in seizure control.

Pregnancy

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 should only be used during pregnancy if the benefit outweighs the risks. Uncontrolled seizures may be harmful to the mother and baby. Inform your doctor before this capsule is prescribed to you.

Breastfeeding

Do not breastfeed while on Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 and for at least one month after stopping. Inform your doctor before this capsule is prescribed to you.

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol as it may worsen drowsiness, dizziness, and increase risk of side effects. It is best to avoid alcohol during treatment.

Liver

Use with caution in patients with liver problems. Dose adjustments may be required.

Kidney

Patients with kidney impairment or a history of kidney stones require close monitoring. Sufficient hydration is necessary to reduce risk.

Using Machines & Driving

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 may cause sleepiness, dizziness, or confusion. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you are sure it is safe for you.

Allergy

Avoid taking Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 if you are allergic to zonisamide or any other sulphonamide medicines (e.g., certain antibiotics, diuretics, or diabetes medicines).

Children

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 is not recommended in children under 6 years. In children above 6, weight and hydration should be monitored regularly.

Older Patients

Elderly patients may be more prone to allergic reactions, rashes, or swelling. They may also require dose adjustments.

Drug-Drug Interactions

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 interacts with the following medicines:

Anticonvulsants such as Topiramate or Acetazolamide: The concomitant use may increase risk of kidney stones.
Phenytoin, Carbamazepine, Rifampicin, Phenobarbital: The concomitant use may reduce levels of zonisamide, requiring dose adjustment.
Digoxin and Quinidine: The concomitant use may increase levels of these medications; monitoring may be required.
Valproate: Increases risk of elevated ammonia levels and confusion.

Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 interacts with the following diseases:

Liver problems: May worsen drug metabolism.
Glaucoma: Zonisamide can worsen eye pressure.

Daily Dose

The recommended daily dose of Zonimid 50 Capsule 10 should be taken as per your doctor's advice. It varies depending on factors like the severity of your condition and how you respond to the medicine. Always adhere to the prescribed dosage and never alter it without consulting your doctor.

Over Dose

Taking more than the prescribed dose may cause sleepiness, nausea, muscle twitches, confusion, irregular heartbeat, breathing difficulty, or even unconsciousness. Seek emergency medical attention immediately.
