Pan 40 Tablet is used to treat conditions caused by too much stomach acid, such as acid reflux (GERD), heartburn and stomach ulcers. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing pantoprazole 40mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
This medicine is also used to heal acid damage to the food pipe (erosive oesophagitis), to manage Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and, with antibiotics, to clear Helicobacter pylori infection. Swallow the tablet whole about an hour before your first meal of the day, and take it for the duration prescribed by your doctor.
Eating smaller meals, avoiding spicy, fatty or fried food, limiting tea, coffee and alcohol, and not lying down soon after eating can reduce acid symptoms.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, low magnesium levels or osteoporosis, and about other medicines you take. Long-term use may affect vitamin B12 and magnesium levels, so your doctor may check these. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if you have difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, vomiting of blood or black stools. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
