CompositionAmitone Tablet is used to relieve long-lasting nerve pain, such as pain from diabetic nerve damage or after shingles, and to prevent chronic tension headaches and migraine. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing amitriptyline 25mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called tricyclic antidepressants.
This medicine is also used at higher doses to treat depression, and sometimes for bedwetting in children aged 6 and above under specialist advice. At low doses it changes how the brain and nerves process pain. Take it once a day in the evening, as it causes drowsiness; your doctor will start low and increase the dose gradually. It may take a few weeks to work.
Keeping a regular sleep routine, staying active and limiting alcohol can support treatment. Getting up slowly from sitting or lying down reduces dizziness.
Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as this can cause withdrawal symptoms; your doctor will reduce the dose gradually. Taking more than prescribed can be very dangerous, so store it safely away from children. Before starting, tell your doctor if you have heart disease or a recent heart attack, an irregular heartbeat, glaucoma, difficulty passing urine, epilepsy, an overactive thyroid, liver disease or bipolar disorder, and about all other medicines you take, especially other antidepressants. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help straight away for low mood, thoughts of self-harm (especially in people under 25), a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting or confusion.
