Suddh Suahaga, known as Tankana/ Tanaka, is a crystalline substance known as borax or sodium tetraborate decahydrate. It crystallises as white masses and as white or clear plates; the latter form turns opaque upon exposure to air. In traditional Ayurveda, especially in Rasa Shastra, Suddh Suahaga is essential in curing ailments and is part of many remedies.

Suddh Suahaga is a naturally occurring mineral that finds its place in several Ayurvedic formulations. It is well known for its healing characteristics and is only used for disinfecting, fungicide, and anti-inflammatory qualities. Suddh Suahaga is also applied without being mixed with any other substances, and the impure types lead to health problems.
In Ayurveda, Suddh Suahaga powder is used to prepare bhasmas, which increases the absorption of a few active principles. This accounts for its usefulness in the withdrawal of heavy metals in the body and general health, thus its use in various Ayurvedic treatments.
Suddh Suahaga, known as Tankana, is extracted chiefly from the Malati River Himalaya, Kashmir and Tibet. This compound is often associated with a type of mud named Tankal, which can be identified in the dried lake beds found in northern India and Tibet regions. To purify Tankana, this mud is boiled in water, filtered, and placed in a hot air environment that will leave borax crystals at the base.
Additionally, borax can be sourced from locations like Borax Lake and Searles Lake in California, as well as from marshy areas surrounding these lakes, contributing to its availability and use in various medicinal formulations in Ayurveda.
Suddh Suahaga powder, better known as Tankana, goes through several careful formulation processes before being used by patients. The procedure starts with stripping bare Tankana before putting it into a clean, dry Khalva yantra equivalent to a grinding mill. Raw Tanaka is then pounded into a fine powder to make it easier for the purification process to take place.
This powdered Tankana is taken in a Sharava, an earthen pot, and heat is applied. The heating process starts with Mandagni heat treatment to remove moisture in the material. It is then raised to Tivragni at the maximum temperature to guarantee no moisture content is left in it. Due to this heating beading, Tankana becomes white, foamy, light, and easily broken like a sponge.
By the end of three such purification rounds, the weight of the Tanaka goes down to roughly 50% of its initial mass. The water is evaporated during the process of purification, and it is imperative to get the best therapeutic value out of the Suddh Suahaga in numerous Ayurvedic products.

Suddh Suahaga, or Borax, primarily consists of the mineral sodium tetraborate. It typically occurs in several forms, including:
These forms vary in the amount of water they contain. Borax is known for its high boron content (~11.3% by weight in decahydrate form), which contributes to its utility in health, industrial, and medicinal applications. The mineral is commonly used in traditional medicine due to its therapeutic properties.
In Ayurveda, borax is primarily used for its healing properties, such as its ability to combat inflammation and support respiratory and digestive health. However, its medicinal use requires purification and preparation to ensure safety and efficacy.
Suddh Suahaga uses are great because of its high boron concentration. It has been a naturally occurring mineral in traditional medicine systems for centuries and has been used as a remedy for various illnesses, making it a worthy treatment option.
Studies also show that people with arthritis have lower levels of boron in the bones and synovial fluid. Including boron may even improve the digestibility and metabolism of calcium; they may make the bones and joints stronger. Daily boron intake tends to result in better joint mobility and less inflammation, making arthritis and the pains it causes bearable.
Topical borax applications also provide relief to a variety of conditions affecting the oral cavity. Borax paste mixed with ingredients such as Cinnabaris and Borneolum is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where people can eliminate the pain and inflammation in their mouth and throat sores. Apart from aiding in quicker healing, this remedy offers relief during meals, helping contain oral diseases.
Suddh Suahaga benefits are also seen as helpful in eye drops, especially in managing eye redness and swelling. These drops offer quick relief from pain and inflammation and guard against infections and soreness due to contact with irritants or allergens. Due to its soothing effects, boron is an essential ingredient in many ocular remedies.
Borax has been seen to have the capacity to manage menstrual problems, especially Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). It also aims to normalise hormonal function, thus removing conditions associated with increased body temperature – ‘hot flushes’, and painful menstruation. Hormonal fluctuations can cause several natural symptoms for the post-menopausal woman, and boron is used to help stabilize these hormones.
Borax inhibits microorganisms and is an effective drug in managing urinary tract infections. According to traditional Chinese medicine, it is an alternative remedy for painful urinary symptoms; it helps to avert stone formulation within the urinary tract. For this reason, it becomes very vital for any individual with urinary dysfunction problems.
Boron naturally supports testosterone levels in males, improving muscle mass and athletic performance. Boron supplementation has been popular among athletes and bodybuilders looking to optimize their physical capabilities and recovery processes.
For a woman suffering from an inflammation of the womb, some comfort may be gained with a warm borax bath. Douching with a borax solution may also manage some symptoms, such as sexual pain and leucorrhea. This application generally supports overall reproductive health, comfort, and quality of life.
Suddh Suahaga is beneficial for skin treatment. Its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal content helps ease skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne. Applying the above as a topical application, Suddh Suahaga has all the properties to remove redness, inflammation, and any form of skin irritation, thus enhancing skin complexion.
It also has a property that inhibits bacterial growth and hence can be used in treating afflicted skin. It also has properties that enhance the rapid healing of injuries, cuts, and sore skin. Also, regular suddh suahaga protects the skin from dryness by balancing the skin’s pH level.
Boron is a micronutrient that helps to assimilate essential macrominerals, including calcium and magnesium, necessary for bone density. Intake of boron-containing supplements like tankan bhasma helps maintain strong bones, a factor that makes the mineral helpful to post-menopausal women since they have a higher tendency to develop osteoporosis. It also helps keep the integrity of bones; clients with disorders affecting their bones, such as osteoporosis and bone fractures, will significantly benefit.
Thus, boron helps the body retain calcium, making bones strong regardless of the person’s age. Because of its contribution to the creation of bone tissue and the mending of damaged tissue, it significantly contributes to the health of bone tissue in the long run.
Boron contributes to the body’s antioxidant defense system by enhancing the activity of certain enzymes responsible for neutralizing free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative damage to cells, leading to premature ageing and chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular disorders.
By promoting the production of antioxidants, boron helps protect the body from the harmful effects of oxidative stress. This mineral also works synergistically with vitamins and minerals like vitamin D and magnesium, further bolstering the body's ability to fight toxins and maintain overall health and well-being.
When considering Suddh Suahaga (Borax), it is essential to be aware of the potential precautions and side effects associated with its internal consumption.
The required dose of Suddha Sauhaga Bhasma is generally about 125-250 mg/ 1 to 2 pinches. It should always be taken strictly under the advice of an expert healthcare provider in light of individual health needs, different disorders, or treatments.
Suddh Suahaga offers multiple health benefits due to its boron content, notably in joint support, skin care, hormonal balance, and urinary health. Its use in managing arthritis, oral inflammation, menstrual irregularities, and reproductive discomfort reflects its versatility in traditional remedies. Furthermore, it contributes to maintaining bone density and improving antioxidant defences, which are critical for long-term wellness. Its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions make it beneficial for both internal and topical use. However, due to potential toxicity risks and reproductive concerns, its usage should be done with precision and a doctor’s guidance to ensure safety and effectiveness.
