SR Fil Enema is used to treat inflammation, ulcers and bleeding in the rectum and lower bowel, such as solitary rectal ulcer and radiation proctitis (damage to the rectum after radiotherapy). It is a single-ingredient medicine containing sucralfate 2g, which belongs to a class of medicines called mucosal protectants.
This medicine forms a protective coating over the inflamed or ulcerated lining of the rectum, shielding it and helping it heal, which can reduce bleeding and discomfort. It is given into the back passage (rectum). Lie on your left side with your right knee bent towards your chest, gently insert the nozzle and squeeze in the contents, as your doctor or nurse has shown you, and try to keep it in for as long as advised.
Eating plenty of fibre, drinking enough water and avoiding straining help protect the rectum. Using the enema after emptying your bowels helps it stay in place.
This medicine is for rectal use only and should not be swallowed. Before using it, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, as sucralfate contains aluminium, and about other medicines you use. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Contact your doctor if bleeding gets heavier, you develop severe stomach pain or fever, or there is no improvement. Do not stop using this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
