FM 40 Tablet is used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers and acid reflux (GERD), easing heartburn, acidity and indigestion. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing famotidine 40mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called H2 receptor blockers.
This medicine reduces the amount of acid made by the stomach, helping ulcers and acid damage to heal. It is also used to treat Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition with very high acid levels. Take it as prescribed, usually once a day at bedtime or twice a day, with or without food.
Eating smaller meals, avoiding spicy, fatty and fried food, limiting tea, coffee and alcohol, not smoking, and not lying down soon after eating help reduce acidity.
Before taking this medicine, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, as the dose may need lowering, a heart rhythm problem, or stomach cancer symptoms such as weight loss, and about other medicines you take. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help for black stools, vomiting of blood, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss or confusion, especially in older adults or people with kidney problems. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
