CompositionFebustat 80 Tablet is used for the long-term treatment of high uric acid levels in adults with gout, helping to prevent painful gout attacks. It is a single-ingredient medicine containing febuxostat 80mg, which belongs to a class of medicines called xanthine oxidase inhibitors.
This medicine lowers the amount of uric acid the body makes, which over time helps dissolve urate crystals in the joints. It is often used when allopurinol is not suitable or has not worked well enough. It does not treat an attack that has already started, and attacks can become more frequent in the first months, so your doctor may also prescribe a medicine such as colchicine to prevent them. Take it once a day, with or without food, and keep taking it even between attacks.
Drinking plenty of water, limiting alcohol (especially beer), sugary drinks and foods high in purines such as red meat, organ meat and some seafood, and keeping a healthy weight help control uric acid.
Before starting, tell your doctor if you have heart disease or have had a heart attack or stroke, as febuxostat may carry a higher risk of heart-related death in these people. Also tell your doctor about any liver, kidney or thyroid problems, and about other medicines you take, especially azathioprine, mercaptopurine or theophylline. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek medical help straight away for chest pain, breathlessness, weakness on one side, or a spreading rash or blisters. Do not stop taking this medicine unless your doctor advises you to do so.
